Belen Art League Gallery

Belen ART League logo

The Belen Art League was founded in 1956. It is a non-profit organization comprised of artists primarily from Belen and other parts of Valencia County New Mexico. The members cover a diverse range of media and styles.

Art League meetings are held at the gallery the 2nd Saturday of each month from 10 am to noon. Members bring work to compete for Artist of the Month. Visitors are welcome.

The league hosts several functions each year including the ever popular Valentine Tea and Concerts in the Park. They also sponser an annual scholarship for a deserving Belen High School art student.

The Belen Art League - Gallery & Gifts was first opened in 2003. It is located in a historic building, in the Heart of Belen, at 509 E Becker Avenue. The gallery is open Wednesday through Sunday from 12:00 to 4:00 pm.

The members of the Art League, who display their work at the gallery, take turns operating it. It houses an ever changing display of wall art, pottery, sculpture, jewelry, etc. It is home to the league's Valentine Tea and Music in the Garden. There is a classroom where several of the members teach classes, which are open to the public.

July 2010

Well, we did it again. We had a very successful yard sale. Thanks to many donations and the hard work of a few people we made lots of money and more on the bake sale. Many, many thanks to those few that managed to be there three days. It is a lot of hard work and we appreciate everyone’s help.

The Children’s Summer Program has been very successful. We have completed two weeks and have had to create a waiting list. There will be two more weeks in July. July 12 – July 15 will feature sand painting by CeCe Aragon and pottery by Bev Stern. July 26 – July 29 Gene McVeigh will demonstrate free form painting and marble trivets will be created. Volunteers to help are welcome. It is a delightful group of children.

We are having a real problem trying to keep the gallery open even four days. After checking the log it was found that we had only five visitors on Sundays between Jan. and May. At the June meeting it was voted to close on Sundays. After a lengthy discussion a committee was formed consisting of Dawn MacDougall, Linda Jasmin and Connie Armijo. The committee has proposed the following schedule: Wed., Thurs., and Sat. at the present schedule of 12:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. and change Fridays to the hours of 4:00 – 7:00. You, the members, are the workers who keep the gallery open. We will have a short discussion of the proposal and the members present will vote.

We have to be open during the hours advertised. When someone comes during the advertised hours and we aren’t open they aren’t going to be inclined to return and face a closed gallery again.

Daniel Ludwig, one of our watercolor artists, is willing to share his techniques on a Thursday or Friday evening during the summer. Since he is out of town most of the week, you should call Sally Nittler, if you are interested.

The member’s only photography show at the gallery is coming soon – July 17 – July 31. Entry forms are due July 9 (see form for more information). The reception will be July 17 at the gallery, 12:00 – 4:00

Art to be hung including photography must be prepared to be hung with wire. It is very difficult to hang using small holes or saw tooth hangers.

Upcoming events:

July 5 – board meeting, 1:00 p.m.

July 10 – regular meeting, 10:00 a.m.

July 9 – entry forms for photography show due

July 14 – photography entries to gallery – 12:00 – 4:00
